Preparing security teams for the future
According to the latest data from Gartner, a technology and global research consulting firm, from 2020 to 2025, around 2 million jobs related to artificial intelligence will have been created. Security and facilities companies must be prepared for this reality. There will be a greater need to interact with this technology in order to improve the overall quality of a security program.
The concept of Artificial Intelligence
Artificial intelligence (AI) is a type of technology that is developed to emulate human behavior, solving complex problems with autonomy for decision making. Robots, and programs that are equipped with AI, are able to learn with experience and reach conclusions based on the available data. Some of the most popular applications of AI in today’s society are autonomous automobiles, voice assistants and chatbots (systems that can interact and solve problems in online chats).
In security, this concept has mainly been explored in monitoring systems. Using intelligent cameras with face recognition, it is possible to automate a registry and access authorizations from both people and vehicles. Other variations have been used in access control and in cyber security.
The IoT (Internet of Things) is another interesting topic. The era of “smart things” has started. Cameras and other security equipment may contain intelligent software units. It is possible for them to have relationships with networks and monitoring centers, adding a larger quantity of data, and enabling new approaches to security management.
The biggest impact of the union between security equipment and AI is the possibility of machine learning. According to this concept, the security equipment begins to have the capacity to learn with day-to-day actions. Robots in charge security patrols, for example, may identify faster or better ways to patrol their environment. Cameras may recognize changes in routine, identify patterns, and then alert security. Based on an initial database, the machines equipped with AI may continue to learn and optimize a number of tasks, bringing gains to the productivity of operations.
Some of the advantages or AI to the security industry will include a reduction of costs in security labour and a lower overall exposure of security professionals to risky situations. Patrols, equipped with artificial intelligence devices may be made by robots in environments that pose a risk to humans, such as locations with extreme temperatures or low visibility.
Although it has the capacity to analyze and respond to data volumes faster than a human being, the technology developed in this area continues to require human interaction. There must be a partnership between human and technology. As a result, there will be a need for qualified security professionals to work with this technology.
Preparing security teams for this changing reality is a challenge with a defined solution: Continuous training. Even in those cases where physical substitution may occur – with robots equipped with cameras for patrols and with real-time broadcasting – we will still count on skilled professionals to interpret and react to their output.
